4 Kinds of Diversity: Explained

  1. Internal diversity. It refers to the attributes and characteristics inherent to individuals and not easily changed. It includes age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and physical abilities.
  2. External diversity. This type encompasses the aspects influenced by external factors and can be changed over time, including educational background, socioeconomic status, language proficiency, and professional experiences.

Representatives of each one face numerous challenges, including:

  • ageism and stereotypes leading to limited opportunities for older or younger individuals;
  • lack of intergenerational collaboration and understanding;
  • limited access to healthcare and support services for different age groups.

The important thing to remember is that each of us is a representative of this type of diversity. Hence, any one of us can face these challenges. For example, older people might not listen to or take the opinions of younger generations seriously, while youngsters may harass and make fun of the older ones. The best way to avoid these issues and eradicate the problem is to treat everyone with respect and forget about prejudiced attitudes toward anyone.


Although some think this type of diversity only includes people with physical disabilities, it is only partially true. This category also refers to individuals with sensory, cognitive, and mental health issues. And they face numerous challenges in the modern world, including:

  • inaccessible infrastructure and environments;
  • discrimination and stigmatization of people with disabilities;
  • limited employment opportunities and workplace accommodations;
  • lack of awareness and understanding of different disabilities.

The first thing you need to remember about the representatives of disability diversity is that they are just the same as you are. They don’t need to be treated with pity, and they shouldn’t be victimized; however, there is also no need to endow them with superpowers. Just be polite and respectful, and maybe make some small gestures to show your support (for example, when talking to the person in the wheelchair, try to sit or stand to adjust posture to eye level).


This type of diversity refers to individuals’ various skills, abilities, talents, and expertise including technical, creative, problem-solving, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Believe it or not, even this type often faces discrimination and other difficulties:

  • biases and preferences for specific skills or educational backgrounds; 
  • limited recognition of diverse abilities and talents;
  • inequitable access to training and development opportunities.

The best thing we can do to overcome these issues is to recognize and value diverse skills. We need to promote a culture of inclusivity and openness to different perspectives, and treat people with due respect regardless of their expertise and abilities in various fields.


Race diversity highlights the differences among people based on their racial backgrounds and ethnic origins. And it’s terrifying that representatives of this type of diversity still encounter so many challenges, including:

  • systemic racism and racial discrimination;
  • disparities in access to education, employment, and resources;
  • stereotyping and racial profiling;
  • lack of representation and inclusion in various fields and institutions.

It is hard to understand why we still discuss racism in the XXI century, but the reality is harsh. Many people believe that in some countries, including the US, racism has become systematic, and despite legal protection and more acknowledgment, people still face it almost every day. 

So what can we do about it? Well, first, we need to (again) be respectful and forget about prejudice. Also, it is essential to promote anti-racist policies, foster diversity, and address systematic racism.


Cultural diversity involves national, regional, ethnic, and other cultural identities. It encompasses various beliefs, values, customs, traditions, languages, and behaviors exhibited by different groups of people. The most common challenges the representatives of this type of diversity face include the following:

  • cultural stereotypes and prejudices;
  • conflicts arising from cultural differences;
  • lack of cultural awareness and sensitivity;
  • exclusion or marginalization of individuals from different cultural backgrounds.

To bridge these gaps and celebrate this type of diversity, we need to promote cultural awareness through education and training and foster intercultural dialogue and understanding. Another astonishing practice is organizing cultural activities and events.


This type of diversity recognizes and respects various religious beliefs, practices, and affiliations. It supports different faiths, such as Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and many other.
